Introducing Tuig typeface, Design Spring Rolls and Music Sprouts
Marmite Defontes newsletter #18
Hello people,
It's spring already and I come with gifts. First, a new font release. Secondly with the usual design and music items. I'm asking you in return to have a look at the question by the end of this newsletter.

Introducing Tuig Typeface Version 1.0
I am delighted to make Tuig available! This typeface is my most legible project to date. This versatile new family is – as usual – a display font: fun and readable at the same time.

I've been teasing this design since September 2023. Needless to say, I'm particularly happy it is out and I can't wait to see what you will design with it.
The Sales Pitch
Its design is inspired by fragile branchlets that eventually turn into strong tree trunks. Tuig curves are generous, and they morph like bamboo canes: they flex without breaking. The big x-height and a handful of adventurous characters put this font family in the friendly category. Variable from the get-go, its expressiveness shines in a bold and sophisticated layout as well as in dynamic and bouncy motion graphics and interactions.
Technically
- A variable font family
- 6 weights: Thin, Light, Regular, SemiBold, Bold & ExtraBold
- The largest character set I've done (yet) covering 383 languages over 508 glyphs
- Some sweet Opentype features like:
- Alternative double storey a
- Alternative uppercase letters
- Alternative figures
- Tabular figures
- etc.
Available now and only through Marmite Defontes website.
Two facts about Tuig
- I added a sixth weight quite late in the production process. It was making sense to provide a wider and more progressive range of options.
- I changed the family name from Twig to Tuig: the first one was already taken and I wanted to keep a name both easy to pronounce and related to plants 🌱. Swapping a letter was the easiest option (and also the laziest).

Design Spring Rolls

Fran Sans, a matrix-based font by Emily Sneddon
Sometimes, it is ansmall detail that triggers creativity and you don't have to wait for a grand revelation to ignite a project. This is exactly what Emily Sneddon did when she noticed the destination display in the San Francisco public transports. From there she designed a font family with 3 styles. Emily gives more details on the process in this article. Thank you, Marc for this discovery. ✨
Tom Sachs, where messy is good and inspiring
Well, the official title of this SXSW talk is way longer: “How to Get Other People to Believe in Your Vision by First Believing in Yourself”. Messy is good is what I got out of this presentation. Of course, I was inspired by Tom Sachs and how he approaches projects. The DIY Space Program installation/exhibition and the story behind it are pure creative gold. Brace yourself for almost an hour of playfulness and genuine curiosity.
Music Sprouts
There have been so many new releases these past few weeks and many of my favourite artists. I'm still catching up on singles and albums. Here are 3 picks.

James Blake “Trying Times”
James soothing voice and melody mastery. I was very much looking for this new release. Listening to his first hit “Retrograde” in 2013, I've been following his evolution as a singer-songwriter. I love the way he produces tracks and the fresh approach he brings to music. Another great Brit musician.
Flea “Maggot Brain”
Never too old to reinvent yourself. This new album “Honora” by Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bass player is an ode to the never-ending pursuit of creativity and evolving what people know about you. Flea was a jazz musician all along, he maybe was not ready yet to embrace it publicly. I picked this cover, one of my favourite tracks from Funkadelic back in 1971. Of course, you should go and listen to the full album.
Jordan Rakei & Nubya Garcia “Monsters”
Another amazing R&B voice, this time from New Zealand. Here's Jordan Rakei new single “Monsters”. Another captivating release. If you dig it, you can loop the track “Learning” from 2025: give me goosebumps every time with its melodies, epic orchestral production and the choir. One last geeky video suggestion on Jordan's studio gears.
Lastly, I'm offering 5 discount codes of 30% off the foundry full catalogue to the first 5 people answering this question: which next release would you like to see from Marmite Defontes?
Some in progress families are:
- Noxi
