Custom Type, Design Links and Music Covers

Marmite Defontes newsletter #14

Good day people,

It’s been a while! We can almost say it was a summer break. Activities at the foundry were very slow during the past few months. Vacations, freelance projects on top of the job. Anyway: I’m back at it. Still planning to publish one (maybe two) new font by the end of the year. Wish me luck.

I’m trying something new this time. I’ve written a post outside the newsletter. This way the newsletter stays short and easy to read.

Here’s the menu

Custom Type You Ask?

I participated in a pitch a couple of months ago for a custom font for a large brand. I laid down my approach and process for the pitch deck and some learning.

Fonts Picture Drop

Some visuals made recently to test out typeface I’m working on.

Design Nuggets

1️⃣ Typeface Design and Legal Protection
Introduction article on the topic of legal protection of the design for fonts. A good starting point if you want to know more about the legal aspect of typeface design and how we can protect our work. Don’t be scared, not much advocate gibberish.

2️⃣ The Design of Dredge 🎣 👁️ 🐙
I’ve shared links of the No Clip team already. This time they made a documentary on the design of the game Dredge with the designer from Black Salt Games. If you like board games, the lore of Cthulhu and some nonsense humour: this catch is for you.

3️⃣ Font for wireframes, prototypes and so on
As I was working on the article about pitching a custom font and to anonymise the slides, I found this font by Dan Ross. Very useful for simulating content or doing wireframes. And it’s free, and it has 3 weights. You’re welcome.

Music Break: Covers

🥁 “Changes” by Moon Tooth
I’ve heavily listened to Moon Tooth during the summer. An underrated rock band if you ask me. Amazing riffs, heavy basslines, powerful drums and epic vocals. I’ve picked a cover they recorded in 2020, from Black Sabbath’s powerful ballad (1972). Charles Bradley also made a very good cover of it (2013).

🇦🇺 “Stayin’ Alive” by Tropical Fuck Storm
A funkier vibe for this cover. Get your boot-cut trousers out of the closet and showcase your Ramones t-shirt. Here is a somehow punk-ish version of the disco hit from the Bee Gees. The Tropical Fuck Storm is a Melbourne band making “Weird music for people who are sick of the same shit.” I totally dig it.

⛷️ “Human Nature Pt. 2” by Youngblood Brass Band
Last cover, from a classic as well. Youngblood Brass Band covering Michael Jackson’s Human Nature. Produced by the legendary Quincy Jones. This cover can lift your mood every morning, enjoy!

Talk to you soon 🤓
